Celebrating Manchester Memorial School's Safe Routes to School Silver Award

Posted

To the Editor,

The Manchester Bike and Pedestrian Committee is proud to congratulate Manchester Memorial Elementary School on receiving the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Silver Award.

This recognition reflects years of collaboration among school staff, town leaders, volunteers, parents, and community partners who share a common goal: making it safer and easier for children to walk and bike to school.

We are especially proud that Principal John Willis accepted the award at the State House and recognized Physical Education and Wellness teacher Mr. Boria for his outstanding work teaching students the skills and confidence they need to walk and ride safely.  These lessons help build lifelong habits that promote health, independence, and responsibility.

The Silver Award is more than a plaque.  It is a statewide recognition of Manchester Memorial's commitment to transportation safety education, student engagement, and creating a culture that encourages active transportation.  Schools earning this distinction help make walking and biking to school safer while promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing traffic congestion, and strengthening community connections.

The Bike & Pedestrian Committee is honored to support these efforts through advocacy, safety initiatives, and partnerships that improve walking and bicycling conditions throughout Manchester-by-the-Sea.  We are grateful for the leadership of Principal Willis, the dedication of Mr. Boria, and the commitment of the entire school community.  While we celebrate this achievement, we also see it as inspiration to continue making our streets safer and more accessible for residents of all ages.

Together, we are building a healthier, safer, and more connected Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Sincerely,

Manchester Bike & Pedestrian Committee
