Girls Soccer
In the Hornets VS Hornets matchup at North Reading High School, the Manchester Essex Girls’ soccer team faced an uphill battle coming out the game with a goal scored in the first five minutes of the game by a North Reading Forward. After a timeout, the Hornets were not able to stop the impressive attacking players from North Reading who combined in the attacking third for two more goals in the first half. The Hornets hung on to hope in the second, but ultimately let two more through the back line for a final 5-0 loss.
The team hoped to bounce back against Rockport in a home game at Hyland Field. With 2 goals scored in the first half (21:00, 30:00,) and one in the second, all off #10 Grace Scarbrough’s corner kicks, the Hornets closed out the game with a Rockport surge in the last 15 minutes. Rockport’s late two goals left fans on the edge of their seats. Ultimately the Hornets held on and won 3-2 with the first two goals from #20 Meg Hurd and the last volleyed in by #2 Charlotte Crocker.
Field Hockey
This was a good week for field hockey, facing two strong CAL opponents. We started off against a deep Newburyport team, vying for possession and scoring opportunities. Kiernan Day tipped in the first goal in the second quarter. A penalty stroke was awarded to both teams, a quite unusual occurrence, where Newburyport scored their equalizer. The team was proud of this tie after 60 minutes of strong teamwork and passing. Wednesday, we faced Ipswich and came out with the win, 1-0. Maya Frangioso’s perfectly placed stick allowed us to put one by an extremely strong Ipswich goalie. We’re proud of the determination and grit shown by all players on the field, particularly the defense whose work as a unit limited Ipswich’s scoring opportunities to less than 5.
Cross Country
The Hornets had an exciting home opening meet against Lynnfield last Wednesday.
The Girls improved to 2-0, beating Lynnfield 25-30. Sabine Cooper cruised to finish first in 21:21 followed by River Silva in 21:40. Whitney Turner out-kicked Lynnfield’s first girl to take third for a hard sweep. In a dual meet if you take the first 3 spots it’s a win as long as you have 5 finishers. Our 4th and 5th runners were Kalin Bennett 9th and Sadie Rich 10th.
The boys had a tough loss by one point again 29-28 but raced very well. Henry Stevens was second, followed by Lyall Cunningham 4th, Gus Hall 5th, Isaiah Nicastro 6th and James Aloi 14th.
This week we have two meets. Wednesday at Georgetown and Saturday Bay State Invitational at Wrentham.
Golf
The Hornets Golf Team came up with a big win this week against the Essex Tech Hawks, at Reedy Meadow in Lynnfield, by a score of 195-192. All eight golfers scored over 24 points, and Jack Lawler posted a season high 38 points. Jake Zschau had a very solid 25 points, and Captain Jack McCavanagh scored 33. The win puts the Hornets at 5-1 on the season with two big away matches this week against Baker Division rivals Hamilton Wenham and Ipswich.
