Gordon Q. MacDougall's life was a vibrant journey, marked not only by his longevity but by the depth of his connections and the strength of his spirit.  At the remarkable age of 101, Gordon, affectionately called "Gordy" by those who knew him well, passed away on September 25th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that the Manchester by the Sea community will long cherish.
Gordon's story began in Prince Edward Island, Canada, where he was one of eleven children born to John and Rhoda MacDougall.  With humble origins, an eighth-grade education, and a heart full of ambition, he moved to Massachusetts accompanied by his beloved wife Joan and a $100 in his pocket.   Together, they built a life characterized by an unparalleled work ethic and a solid Christian foundation.  Their shared journey resulted in a loving family of five children—David, Nancy, Linda, Phil, and Janet—as well as nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
As a fixture in the local community, Gordy was often the first face you would see in the town's cherished spots like Singing Beach, the local post office, the park, or Richdale's.  His dream of winning big on scratch tickets was matched only by his desire to share his hoped-for fortune with others.
His warmth and hospitality were also felt internationally through the families he and Joan sponsored from across the globe.  Countries such as Iran, Laos, Spain, France, Iraq, Japan, Sweden, and South Africa were brought closer to Manchester by the Sea through Gordy's generous spirit.
Gordy will be remembered for his robust health, his love for gardening and spending time outdoors, and his incomparable kindness.  His capacity for forgiveness, his readiness to help those in distress, and his deep commitment to his faith and church attendance every Sunday are the traits that many will hold dear in his memory.
A celebration of life service will honor Gordon's rich life on Thursday, October 3rd, to be held at the Corner Stone church in Manchester by the Sea.  This event will pay tribute to a man who was not only the oldest in his community but also among the most cherished for his love, devotion, and willingness to make every day a reason to celebrate.
