Why I’m Running for Re-Election as Library Trustee in Manchester

Posted

To the Editor,

My name is Sarah Dunn Davis, and I am seeking re-election to the Manchester Public Library Board of Trustees.
I have had the privilege of serving as one of the three Library Trustees since August 2023, when I was appointed by unanimous vote of the Select Board, and later elected by town voters in 2024. Over the past almost two years, I have been deeply committed to supporting and advancing the vital role the Library plays in the life of our community.
Beyond my official trustee duties, I am a frequent visitor to the Library with my family. You will see me there often wrangling my two young children, who love to discover new books, work on the puzzle by the fireplace, and play with the LEGO sets in the children’s room—experiences that remind me of the Library’s importance to all families in town, especially those with young children. With children at Memorial Elementary School, I recognize the importance of the Library’s role in supporting and complementing our schools, particularly as our schools face potential budget cuts to library services.
Professionally, I am a corporate attorney at Ropes & Gray LLP in Boston, advising clients on mergers and acquisitions. Previously, I was vice president and senior counsel at a public company and clerked on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. My background in law and finance supports my work in planning and managing the Library’s operational budget, capital requests, fundraising initiatives, and grant applications. Strong communication skills have helped me effectively advocate for the Library before town boards and through public outreach. I have also formed strong relationships and collaborate closely with my fellow Trustees, the Library staff, the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation to advance our shared goals.
I believe the Library is much more than a collection of books and other materials; it is a cornerstone of community life, offering enriching programming for all ages, ranging from children’s story time and technology workshops to author talks and art exhibitions. To this end, during my tenure, I have prioritized initiatives to preserve and enhance our historic 138-year-old building, advocating for necessary repairs, improved accessibility, and expanded programming space. These efforts have involved working with the town on maintenance planning, preparing for the launch of a capital campaign for potential renovation and expansion, partnering with other institutions in town to explore shared space opportunities and pursuing grants to secure additional funding.
I would be grateful for your support to continue to serve as a steward and advocate for the Library’s bright future.
I respectfully ask you to vote for me for Library Trustee on May 20.
Sarah Dunn Davis
