The Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestras (NMYO) is set to perform a chamber music concert later this month at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport.

This concert will feature all of the Ipswich-based NMYO's Symphony Orchestra and Select Flute Choir musicians; joined this year by a saxophone quartet and percussion ensemble.  This is the culmination of an eight-week rehearsal period during which each of the small string, woodwind, flute, brass, saxophone, and percussion ensembles rehearse with visiting professional musicians. These twelve small ensembles will perform music by both classical and modern composers including Ludwig van Beethoven, Paquito D’Rivera, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Florence Price.

The show is free to the public, and scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28.

“The skills our students gain—listening, communication, leadership, and musical independence—extend far beyond their chamber group, shaping them into more expressive, confident musicians in every ensemble they play.” says Michael Coelho, NMYO’s music director.

Coelho leads an accomplished team of music professionals, NMYO’s 155 musicians come from 40+ towns throughout northeast Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire and participate in one or more of the six large ensembles offered.  The regular rehearsal and concert schedule is supplemented with master classes, enrichment days, chamber music, and community service outreach concerts to underserved populations.

NMYO provides youth musicians with exceptional ensemble training and opportunities for cognitive, social, and personal growth through musical performance and community service.  Because this is free to the public, NMYO is supported by many area sponsors and grants, including New England Biolabs, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Carriage House Violins of Johnson Stringed Instruments, Avier Flight Training, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Cummings Center, Coburn Charitable Society, Demoulas Foundation, and the Institution for Savings.  The group is also supported by local Cultural Councils of Boxford, Hamilton-Wenham, Ipswich and Topsfield also lend their support for this concert.
