Festival-by-the-Sea returns Aug. 1 with artisans, music and downtown shopping

One of Manchester's signature summer traditions returns Saturday, Aug. 1, as Festival-by-the-Sea transforms the downtown into a daylong celebration of local art, music, food and shopping.

Presented by the Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Town of Manchester-by-the-Sea and local businesses, the free festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Town Hall Park, Reed Park and Masconomo Park.

More than 90 artisans, food vendors and nonprofit organizations are expected to participate, offering original artwork, handcrafted goods, local food and family activities throughout the day.  Children's attractions will include face painting with Miss Wendy and a reptile exhibit presented by the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team.

Festival goers can also browse the annual “Sale by the Sea,” as downtown retailers spill onto the sidewalks with special promotions, seasonal merchandise and festival discounts. Organizers say the combination of the outdoor marketplace and Manchester's walkable downtown provides visitors with an opportunity to explore local businesses while enjoying the festival.

Live music will be featured throughout the day at the Masconomo Park bandstand and Town Hall Park.  Scheduled performers include Corey Wrinn at 10 a.m., Jim and Tonic at noon, and Rob Banks and the Money Makers at 2 p.m. at the bandstand, while Liam Anastasia-Murphy performs from 11 a.m. to noon at Town Hall Park, followed by Matt Rich and Gil Clark from noon to 3 p.m.

To help ease parking, a free shuttle sponsored by Beauport Ambulance will operate continuously from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. between the Manchester Essex Regional High School lower parking lot and downtown, with stops at Masconomo Park, Town Hall Park, Reed Park and 7 Summer St.  The final shuttle departure from Masconomo Park will be at 4 p.m.

Now in its annual summer tradition, Festival-by-the-Sea has become one of Manchester's largest community events, drawing residents and visitors alike to celebrate local artists, businesses and the town's coastal character.

Admission is free.
