Cape Ann Rally to Protest the White House Slide into Authoritarianism

Posted

To the Editor,

On Saturday June 14, a hopefully LARGE group will gather at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester from 12 noon to 2pm. It will be ONE of about 1500 such peaceful protests across the country.

"NO KINGS" is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies. They have:

  • cracked down on free speech,
  • detained people for their political views,
  • threatened to deport American citizens,
  • defied court orders & threatened judges,
  • sent a large contingent of the military to Los Angeles county against the wishes of the L.A.P.D. Chief, the mayor of LA, and the California governor,
  • all the while enriching themselves and their billionaire allies.

"A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values."

In America, we don’t put up with would-be kings. Yet Donald Trump has scheduled a massive military parade in Washington D.C. on June 14. Complete with 6,600 soldiers, 50 aircraft, and 150 military vehicles (including 28 M1A2/Abrams tanks).

It takes place on Trump's 79th birthday, and it would not be happening except that he, like a King, wanted and ordered it. Although it will take place during a long planned, multi-day celebration of the Army's 250th birthday, the parade was not the Army's idea. It was the President's idea to spend $25-45 million on "his parade" even while Congress is working to cut crucial Medicaid help across the country.

"NO KINGS" will not be protesting in Washington. Instead, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t—to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings.
