Cape Ann Plein Air 2025 wrapped up Sunday, marking another vibrant week celebrating the light, color, and character of Cape Ann that made this region the historic birthplace of American “en plein air” (outside, “in the moment”) painting.
Over seven days, painters captured scenes across Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, and Manchester — from working harbors and salt marshes to winding village streets and granite shores — producing an extraordinary body of work that reflected the region’s enduring beauty and creative spirit.
One of this year’s standout moments was Saturday’s Quick Draw competition in downtown Manchester. It was a perfect morning, and drew a crowd of onlookers as artists raced to complete paintings in just two hours before exhibiting them at the First Parish Community Hall. The event was a hit with both artists and the public, underscoring the energy that makes Cape Ann Plein Air one of New England’s top arts festivals. It’s also an amazing draw for visitors during the early fall season, bringing them downtown to shop and eat.
Organizers thanked the 40 visiting artists, patrons, collectors, and volunteers whose enthusiasm made the 2025 festival a resounding success — and to the Cape Ann community for continuing to rally around creativity, friendship, and a shared love of the arts, and the beauty of the area we live in.
